Tutorial: Love Happy Accidents? Chop Your Samples Like This...
Learn a fun sampling workflow for coming up with unpredictable beat/song elements.
In this video I share a step-by-step guide to my favourite experimental sample chopping technique.
Although I'm using my MPC One in the video, the method is brand/sampler agnostic. The MPC does have a bit of a leg up (auto key detection) but I include some workarounds if you are using a different sampler (hardware or software, it doesn't matter). Although not rocket science, this is a tutorial aimed more at intermediate level sampler users. It's by no means impossible for beginners though.
This technique is great for coming up with unpredictable elements for your beats, whether that's your main melody sample loop or specific instruments like a bass line or any kind of lead etc. It allows you to naturally make samples your own and is a godsend with beating beat block/writer's block, as it enables you to come up with inspiring melodies and sounds.
Most importantly, it's just a ton of fun! If you do end up trying this technique, please drop links in the video’s comments. I’d love to hear what you made!
